One Step Away: 'Knock Out Homelessness' event Thursday
On May 12, One Step Away will hold its sixth annual Knock Out Homelessness event, presented by Willis Towers Watson.
The event supports Philadelphia's street newspaper produced and distributed by people working to break the cycle of homelessness. One Step Away's mission is to create income opportunities, teach life and job skills, and advocate for social change.
The Knock Out Homelessness event was created to carry on the message of the late world champion and formerly homeless Philadelphia boxer Matthew Saad Muhammad.
"I've had some tough times, but I am still getting back up," Saad Muhammad said in a 2014 interview with One Step Away. "That's why I'm proud to represent One Step Away."
Saad Muhammad had one of the most iconic stories in sports – a Philadelphia legend who rose to become a world boxing champion after he was abandoned on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as a child. What people may not know about him was that, even after he hung up his gloves, he still had to keep fighting. In his adult life, like his beginning, he had periods where there was no place to call home and he was living in shelters. Even in those times of adversity, Saad Muhammad advocated for the lives of others experiencing homelessness.
Help One Step Away celebrate Matt's legacy and continue the fight at the 6th Annual Knock Out Homelessness event on May 12 from 5:30-9:30pm at Chickie's & Pete's South Philadelphia Play 2.
Enjoy a night of celebrity appearances, silent auction items, raffle prizes, food and beverages, and video gaming. Proceeds from the event support One Step Away in its mission of empowerment and advocacy. When you join Knock Out Homelessness you create economic opportunities for those in need. You help 65 vendors make a living each month distributing One Step Away.
Join One Step Away on May 12 to support those experiencing homelessness and continue Matt's legacy: Everybody hurts. Everybody gets hit. Everybody gets down. But as Matt showed, in and out of the ring—you can get back up.
