TIPS FOR INQUIRER CONTRIBUTORS

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Our preference is that you e-mail your Letter to the Editor to inquirer.letters@phillynews.com. You can also fax letters to 215-854-5884 or mail them to The Inquirer, Box 8263, Philadelphia, Pa. 19101.

  1. Letters should be limited to no more than 150 words; preferably, fewer. Editors can always take a sharp pencil to an over-long letter, but it's our preference that writers try to hit the mark themselves. That makes more sense, since it's your letter, after all. The realistic lengths to shoot for are as follows: 75 words for a brief comment, perhaps focusing on one issue; 150 words for a lengthy comment with several threads of thought.

  2. Letters will be edited, mostly for space reasons (see above), but also for clarity and accuracy. Just as we would with an Inquirer staff writer's work, the editors' goal is to publish letters that are polished while retaining as much of a writer's voice and approach to a subject as possible.

  3. Writers must include a home address, and daytime and evening telephone numbers for verification. We may e-mail, call, or ask that you verify your letter using our online form.

  4. With your permission, we will publish your e-mail address, in addition to your name and city. We are happy to withhold your e-mail address. We only require that we publish your name and town.

Our staff attempts to verify the authorship of every letter considering for publication. Due to space limitations, however, not every letter that is verified can be published in The Inquirer.
