"I just don't see how Guantanamo . . . somehow takes away the greatness of America, and that [it] somehow takes away . . . our embracement of freedoms and our bringing freedoms over the course of our history around the world . . .
"On the Fourth of July, it's a good time to recall what Oliver Wendell Holmes said . . . [that] the greatness of America comes not in giving freedom of speech to things that we like but to give freedom of speech to things that we hate."
