Weeklong celebration at zoo

Events begin on Saturday morning.

The New Year's Res-ZOO-lutions Celebration at the Philadelphia Zoo will begin Saturday morning and continue through Jan. 2.

The celebration, offered 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., is the first event for the zoo's Happy New Year "Green Party" and Zoo Year Pajama Party next weekend. The zoo will focus on being greener in the new year. Families can enjoy learning tips on how to improve the environment and how to create environmentally friendly decorations.

The zoo will host a Froggin' Family Pajama Prowl from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday in honor of the Year of the Frog. Recommended for children ages 4 to 8, the after-dark program will introduce participants to frog and toad species from around the world.

The Please Touch Museum will welcome the coming year with its annual Countdown to Noon celebration from 11:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Kid-friendly New Year's festivities will start with a musical performance by Louis Miranda, followed by two Mummers string band performances and two countdowns, one at noon and another at 1 p.m.

Throughout the celebration, children can dress up and play with props and instruments while enjoying entertainment by Mother Goose and magician Tommy McDonnell.

For partygoers with a more lenient bedtime, the 15th annual Blue Cross RiverRink New Year's Eve Party on Ice will begin at 11 p.m. Wednesday at Penn's Landing.

Along with skate time, party highlights include free psychic readings, food and refreshments, and strolling entertainment by the Mummertime band. A fireworks presentation will be staged over the Delaware River at midnight.
