Storytellers to unite neighborhoods
An afternoon of folktales throughout Phila. will relate history and values.

GriotWorks, an organization that aims to bring communities together through storytelling and folklore, will present Stories in Service Day of Neighborhood Storytelling on Saturday. At noon, groups of storytellers will perform simultaneously in neighborhoods throughout Philadelphia with a one-hour interactive storytelling program for adults and children, along with drummers and African dancers.
The storytellers who will perform at Lonnie Young Recreation Center, Norris Square Park, and DiSilvestro Playground will entertain children with folktales including "B'rer Rabbit" and other moral-based animal stories about community. Some are derived from African traditions and relay the values and history embedded in the culture.
Each program includes a representation of a neighborhood village and lets children interact through call and response, song, movement, and rhythmic expression.
At 4, all the storytellers, drummers, and dancers will gather at the Community Education Center in University City for a round-robin-style outdoor storytelling program.
