Ex-PSU player faces trial for stabbing death of friend

A DNA sample on a bloody glove found in the home of a Penn State student stabbed 93 times does not conclusively match the former PSU football player charged with the victim's murder, a police detective testified yesterday.

A DNA sample on a bloody glove found in the home of a Penn State student stabbed 93 times does not conclusively match the former PSU football player charged with the victim's murder, a police detective testified yesterday.

But tests also don't rule out the defendant, Lavon Chisley, as the source of the DNA, Patton Township (Pa.) Detective Christopher Federinko said at a preliminary hearing yesterday.

A judge ordered Chisley to stand trial on first- and third-degree murder charges at the conclusion of the hearing. Prosecutors said Chisley, 23, of Waldorf, Md., killed his friend, Langston Carraway, last June, with robbery the likely motive.

Defense attorney Karen Muir has said that Chisley denies having anything to do with the killing.

Chisley was kicked off the football team for poor grades before the 2005 season.

* The Atlantic Coast Conference admitted that a timing error was made in the closing seconds of No. 10 Duke's 68-66 win over 19th-ranked Clemson.

The confusion started shortly after Clemson's Vernon Hamilton made a layup to pull the Tigers to 66-63 with 5 seconds left. Josh McRoberts' inbounds pass for Greg Paulus went right to Hamilton. Hamilton hit a three-pointer to tie it with 1.8 seconds left, which seemed to have the game headed for overtime. But officials stopped play to review the time remaining and restored the clock to 4.4 seconds. After reviewing film, the ACC said that appears to have been an error.
