Toomer gets divorce, avoids messy trial

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - New York Giants wide receiver Amani Toomer and his wife of more than 4 years were granted a divorce yesterday after 2 days of closed-door negotiations that produced an agreement on division of their assets and avoided a trial.

"It's a great day, personally for me, and I'm just real happy right now," Toomer told the Jersey Journal, of Jersey City, shortly after the hearing in family court had concluded. After the ruling was made, he left the courtroom, walked into a nearby room and raised both fists above his head in celebration.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

"It wasn't great for me, and it wasn't great for her. You just kind of meet in the middle, and that's how these things get resolved," he said. "I'm ready to move on."

State Superior Court Judge Maureen Montineo granted the divorce to Toomer, 32, and his wife, Yola Dabrowski, 34, citing irreconcilable differences.

"I feel vindicated, I feel relieved, and I'm ready to move on with my life," Dabrowski told the newspaper. "It is a bittersweet day, but it's a good time to move forward."

Dabrowski's attorney, Thomas Snyder, called the division of assets "a fair, substantial and generous resolution."

Toomer had sought an annulment, claiming his wife refused to have children and underwent three abortions without his knowledge or consent.

In filing for a divorce, Dabrowski said she didn't want a family with Toomer, because she didn't feel he would be there "emotionally or physically" for their child. She also accused Toomer of being egotistical, paranoid and insecure and of hindering her career as a chiropractor and interfering with her law school studies.

Toomer claimed Dabrowski refused to undergo treatment for depression and often smoked in his presence despite knowing that it aggravated his asthma.

Dabrowski claimed that Toomer was "unduly demanding" for sex - once urinating on her clothing when she declined his advances. *
