A History of the Eagles’ Receivers & Tight Ends

1934 Joe Carter sets a team record by scoring four TDs vs. the Cincinnati Reds.

1940 Rookie end Don Looney catches 58 passes, breaking the team record by 27.

1947 Pete Pihos, an all-American from Indiana, joins local semipro product Jack Ferrante to form the Eagles' first topflight receiving tandem.

1949 Pihos catches a 31-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Thompson in the 14-0 championship game victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

1953-55 Pihos leads the NFL in receptions three straight seasons, then retires.

1956 Pete Retzlaff is added after being waived by the Detroit Lions.

1957 Tommy McDonald leads a rookie class that also includes fellow future Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen.

1960 McDonald, Retzlaff, and Bobby Walston combine for 22 TD catches, and McDonald hauls in one more in the 17-13 title-game win over the Green Bay Packers.

1965 With 66 receptions for 1,190 yards, Retzlaff is a consensus all-pro at the evolving position of tight end.

1967 Ben Hawkins, recognizable by his dangling chin strap, catches 59 passes for a league-best 1,265 yards.

1969 Acquired in a minor trade from the Rams, Harold Jackson catches 65 passes for a league-high 1,116 yards.

1971 Tall and rangy Harold Carmichael is drafted in the seventh round.

1972-74 Tight end Fred Hill is the driving force behind the team's Fly for Leukemia program, which leads to the opening of the first Ronald McDonald House.

1979 Carmichael sets an NFL record by catching a pass in his 105th straight game. The streak ends in 1980 after 127 games.

1980 Tight end Keith Krepfle catches an 8-yard pass from Ron Jaworski for the Eagles' only touchdown in their 27-10 loss in Super Bowl XV.

1983 Mike Quick, a first-round pick in 1982, starts a string of five straight Pro Bowl appearances. Carmichael, meanwhile, finishes his Eagles career with 589 catches.

1985 Quick hauls in a 99-yarder from Jaworski in overtime against Atlanta.

1988-89 As Quick's career is derailed by injuries, tight end Keith Jackson becomes Randall Cunningham's most-used receiver.

1990 Rookie Fred Barnett catches an acrobatic 95-yard TD pass from Cunningham against Buffalo.

1992 A judge declares Jackson an unrestricted free agent. He signs with Miami.

1996 South Jersey product Irving Fryar, signed as a free agent, sets a team record with 88 receptions.

2003 Freddie Mitchell catches a firstdown pass from Donovan McNabb on a fourth-and-26 play to spark a playoff win over Green Bay.

2004 Acquired in a trade after a dispute over his contract status, Terrell Owens catches 14 TD passes, then returns from an injury to make 9 receptions for 122 yards in the Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots.

2005 After a nasty and public salary dispute, Owens is released in midseason.
