Joe McColgan, the freshman boys' basketball coach last season at Palmyra, has been named the school's varsity coach.

McColgan, son of the former longtime Woodrow Wilson athletic director of the same name, replaces Mike Tumelty, who resigned after the season.

A 1996 graduate of Cherokee, McColgan also is a former assistant coach at Camden Catholic.

"I am really excited to get started," said McColgan, who along with his father is a football assistant at Willingboro. "As a teacher in the school, I know the youngsters, and it's a great group to work with."

Palmyra is coming off a 6-15 season. The Panthers qualified for the South Jersey Group 1 playoffs, losing to Burlington City in the first round.
