The numbers are off the charts.
They batted .429 as a team. They scored 323 runs. They had 371 hits.
They won 20 games by the 10-run rule.
But Gloucester Catholic baseball coach Dennis Barth believes there was something else that best defined his 2011 Rams.
"They came to play every game," Barth said. "They were the most consistent team I've ever had in terms of being into every game, cheering every inning, never getting down, always being ready to play."
Gloucester Catholic went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in The Inquirer's South Jersey rankings. The Rams finished 31-2 and won the Non-Public B state title with a 14-2 victory over Newark Academy on Saturday at Toms River North.
Gloucester Catholic is No. 9 in MaxPreps' Xcellent 25 national rankings.
The Rams' two losses were by 4-1 to host Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas - which is No. 7 in the MaxPreps rankings and No. 3 in USA Today's Super 25 - in the Bishop Gorman Easter Classic and by 4-3 to Buena in the semifinals of the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic.
"Give Buena credit - they played well that day," Barth said. "It wasn't our day, but that's baseball. Even in our two losses, our guys weren't flat. They were into the game. Things just didn't go our way."
Gloucester Catholic was led by senior lefthander Cody Brown, who compiled a 12-0 record with a 0.80 ERA. Brown, who set a school record with 26 career victories, also batted .390.
The attack was led by junior first baseman John Brue (.551 average, nine homers), junior second baseman Joe Brooks (.444 average, eight triples) and senior centerfielder Steve Wilgus (.469 average, 24 steals).
But the Rams' lineup was stacked from top to bottom as junior leftfielder Pat Kane batted .490, junior third baseman Brett Tenuto batted .477, junior shortstop Rob Alessandrine batted .451, and junior catcher Elliott McCummings batted .435.
"It was our depth more than anything else," said Wilgus, who has signed with Monmouth. "We had a No. 9 hitter [Alessandrine] who was hitting way above .400."
Although Brown was the unquestioned ace, the pitching depth was just as formidable. Sophomore righthander Mike Shawaryn, who might be the team's top professional prospect, went 7-0 with a 1.56 ERA. Senior righthander Bill Mendek was 4-1 with a 1.71 ERA. Senior lefthander Casey Brown, Cody's twin, was 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA, and senior righthander Jeff Paglione was 4-0 with a 0.39 ERA.
"We just had a great group of kids who came to play every day," said Cody Brown, who along with his brother has signed with Central Connecticut State. "We had a lot of team chemistry. We would all pick each other up."
