Clots end Nittany Lion's career

Penn State defensive tackle Evan Haithes' playing career is over because of complications from blood clots, coach Bill O'Brien told reporters Tuesday in Washington.

Penn State defensive tackle Evan Haithes' playing career is over because of complications from blood clots, coach Bill O'Brien told reporters Tuesday in Washington.

Haithes, a sophomore, will remain on scholarship as a graduate assistant.

The clots developed in his legs during six-hour drives home to Virginia early last year for his grandfather's funeral. The clots spread to his lungs, and he was hospitalized in March 2011 with a life-threatening situation.

He was able to play only two games for the Nittany Lions last fall. The recurrence of the clots forced him to miss the second half of the season and all of spring practice.
