Sports in Brief: Union add another goalkeeper

The Union on Monday signed goalkeeper Brian Holt, who was a four-year starter at Creighton after redshirting his freshman year.

Holt, 25, set an NCAA record as a senior with a .208 goals-against average while leading the NCAA with 19 shutouts. He has played for Union affiliates Reading United AC of the Premier Development League and the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL PRO league. Terms were not disclosed.

His signing gives the Union three goalkeepers, including veteran Zac MacMath and Connecticut's Andre Blake, the top overall pick in January's Major League Soccer SuperDraft. They had only two keepers last season.

Chelsea's 1-0 win at Manchester City left Arsenal atop the Premier League standings with a two-point lead over City and Chelsea.

Former Brazil and Lyon midfielder Juninho, 39, is retiring after a 20-year career. He spent time last season with the New York Red Bulls.

NFL Kyle Shanahan, 34, was hired as offensive coordinator for new Cleveland Browns coach Mike Pettine Jr. after spending the previous four years in the same role with the Washington Redskins.

Pettine's NFL experience is as a defensive assistant, so the former William Tennent and North Penn coach will rely on Shanahan, who has been a coordinator for the last six seasons.

For the fourth time in five years, the Super Bowl set a record for the most-watched television event in U.S. history, drawing 111.5 million viewers even though Seattle's 43-8 victory over Denver wasn't competitive. The game eclipsed the 111.3 million who watched the 2012 Super Bowl between the New York Giants and New England Patriots, according to the Nielsen company.

COLLEGES Imhotep Charter senior defensive tackle Tyrone Barge, who last season helped the Panthers go 12-3 and advance to the PIAA Class AA state championship game, has committed to play at Rhode Island. "I really like the campus, and I like the staff that the new coach [Jim Fleming, the former defensive coordinator at Central Florida] has put together," the 6-foot-1, 270-pounder said. Barge considered scholarship offers from Delaware State and New Hampshire, among others.

BASKETBALL The United States will play Turkey in the group stage of this summer's World Cup of Basketball in Spain in a rematch of the 2010 final. The Americans also were drawn to play the Dominican Republic, Finland, New Zealand, and Ukraine in Group C.

BASEBALL Arizona avoided arbitration with Gerardo Parra by agreeing to a one-year, $4.85 million contract with the two-time Gold Glove outfielder. Parra earned his second Gold Glove last season when he set a club record with 17 outfield assists.

The Diamondbacks extended the contracts of manager Kirk Gibson and general manager Kevin Towers that were set to expire after the coming season. The lengths of the extensions were not divulged.

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter took on-field batting practice for the first time since his 2013 season was cut short by injuries.

BOXING Wladimir Klitschko will defend his WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight titles against Australian challenger Alex Leapai in Oberhausen, Germany, on April 26.
