Sports in Brief: Staley lands top recruit for South Carolina

A'ja Wilson, one of the nation's top women's basketball recruits, said Wednesday she will play for South Carolina, coached by Philadelphia native Dawn Staley. The 6-foot-5 forward from Heathwood Hall in Columbia decided to stay close to home, choosing the Gamecocks over national champion Connecticut, North Carolina, and Tennessee.

Point guard Tarin Smith of St. Anthony High in Jersey City signed a letter of intent to play at Nebraska. Another New Jersey point guard, Point Pleasant Beach's Matt Farrell, signed a letter of intent to play at Notre Dame.

Kansas State basketball coach Bruce Weber received a one-year contract extension through the 2018-19 school year.

Holy Family's Bailey Walters was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball player, pitcher, and rookie of the week. The freshman was 3-0 and did not allow an earned run in 20 innings of work. She batted .455 in seven games.

NFL A person familiar with the deal said quarterback Josh Freeman has agreed to terms with the New York Giants.

The New York Jets signed former Titans running back Chris Johnson to a two-year deal a little more than a week after he was officially released by Tennessee.

The Seattle Seahawks and wide receiver Sidney Rice agreed to terms on a deal.

Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly plans to celebrate Easter at home in suburban Buffalo with his family before returning to New York City to resume treatments for sinus cancer.

Kansas City Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe pleaded guilty to amended charges of defective equipment and littering in connection with his November arrest for possessing marijuana. Bowe paid $610 in fines after his plea was entered in municipal court in Riverside, Kan.

SOCCER Major League Soccer announced its latest addition, an expansion team for Atlanta that will begin play in 2017 at the city's new retractable roof stadium. The team will be owned by Arthur Blank, who also controls the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. Blank reached a deal with the city last year to build a $1 billion downtown stadium next to the soon-to-be-demolished Georgia Dome.

Gareth Bale filled the void left by the injured Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring a late goal to seal Real Madrid's 19th Copa del Rey title in a 2-1 win over Barcelona in Valencia, Spain. Ronaldo's extra-time play gave Madrid the 2011 Copa del Rey title at Barcelona's expense. In his absence, Bale scored in the 85th minute. Angel Di Maria scored Madrid's opener in the 11th minute, but defender Marc Bartra evened the score in the 67th. The goal appeared to energize Barcelona, sparking Lionel Messi into action and ensuring that the last 15 minutes became a frenetic back-and-forth contest.

GOLF Jason Day has a cast on his left hand to immobilize his injured thumb and isn't expected to return to competition until The Players Championship in three weeks.
