Central, Robeson take track titles

The Central boys' team was the big winner once again at the Public League track and field championships Thursday at the Northeast supersite. The Lancers outdistanced second-place Del-Val Charter, 140-80.5, in the overall standings.

Walt Pegues, who won two field events Wednesday, continued his big week by taking home the 100 meters in 10.95 seconds, edging teammate Tyree Brooks, who finished in the same time.

Simon Gratz's Tyree Rouse, who came in .01 of a second behind the leaders in the 100, won the 200 in 21.44. Pegues finished second at 21.82.

Central's Barren McCoy captured the 800 in 1:58.27 to continue the Lancers' big day. Del-Val Charter's Tyrell Maddox placed second (1:58.32).

It was all Del-Val Charter in the 400. Khalil Williams (49.66) came in first, and Maddox was right behind (50.35).

Girls

Jameela Muhammad and Markeeta Thomas each won two events for Robeson, which used a big performance on Day 2 of the Public League championships to overcome Northeast and win the overall meet, 124-118.

Muhammad triumphed in the 100 (12.51) and 200 (25.23). Thomas captured the 100 hurdles (14.37) and 300 hurdles (43.32).

Also winning for Robeson were Quadaisha Newkirk (400, 57.70) and its 4x100 team (48.91).

Franklin Towne Charter's Jessica Beideman won the 800 in 2:30.24. Danae Colston, of Engineering and Science, captured the 1,600 in 5:26.46.

Masterman's Claudia Ashworth cruised to victory in the 3,200 in 11:49.29, nearly a full minute ahead of teammate Carina Flaherty, who came in at 12:44.44, more than 1:30 ahead of third place.
