WIP host Tony Bruno announces he's retiring from radio

The Philly native said his decision has nothing to do with speculation he had issues with WIP co-host Josh Innes.

TONY BRUNO is going out on top.

Yesterday, the 63-year-old Philly native, who along with Josh Innes co-hosted Philly's No. 1-rated sports radio show on 94 WIP, said he is retiring.

The two had only been paired since February when they took over the afternoon spot previously held by Anthony Gargano and Rob Ellis. Since then, the show has been the highest rated among males between the ages 25 and 54.

Bruno, missing this week, said in a statement that speculation that he and Innes were feuding was not the reason for his decision.

"First off, I did not quit in haste because I 'hated' or couldn't work with Josh Innes. That is totally untrue," Bruno said in the statement. "Josh and I have never had any arguments or confrontations during or after any shows since Day 1. The modern world of radio and social media has sucked the fun out of doing this due to 'factions' whose sole attempt is to provoke 'wars' or have listeners 'take sides' to anger or distract the process of doing radio every day."

On Tuesday, Crossing Broad reported that Bruno was upset with the way Innes interacted with a caller. The story also noted that Bruno had retweeted - perhaps accidentally - a post calling for Innes to be fired.

"There has been a flood of misinformation, speculation, Twitter, blogger and newspaper hysteria, name-calling, and just absolute insanity about what happened at WIP," said Bruno, a Neumann High and Temple grad.

"After 45 years of pursuing my dreams and goal of radio and climbing the sports radio stairs to the highest rungs, the format and industry in general no longer provide me joy and satisfaction.

"I decided to resign from WIP and from regular long-form terrestrial radio as a result and will pursue my podcasts and other things to keep me occupied and happy."

Bruno's career includes national shows on ESPN radio and Fox Sports radio. He also had a gig with rival 97.5 The Fanatic before joining WIP.
