About the Bruins: A product of Overbrook High School, Hazzard was named the United States Basketball Writers Association's national player of the year, despite not leading his team in scoring ... In the title game, UCLA used a 16-0 run over a 2:40 span of the first half to turn a three-point deficit into a 13-point lead and never looked back. Goodrich put up 27 points and Washington 26 points and 12 rebounds ... Hard to believe, but it took 16 years for Wooden to win his first national championship with the Bruins. By comparsion, Jay Wright will start his 15th season with Villanova in the fall ... Hazzard would guide UCLA to its only NIT Championship in his first of four seasons as head coach in 1984-85 ... Wooden went from a man-to-man full-court press to a 2-2-1 full-court zone press after being elminated by Arizona State in the 1963 tourney. Defense, as we have come to know it, had been changed forever ... This team played before Pauley Pavilion was built and the men's gym sat just 1,500, so home games were played at L.A. Sports Arena, Long Beach Arena and in Santa Monica ... Their pre-NCAA Tournament opponents finished with a combined record under .500 (328-345) ... League games were often played on back-to-back nights against the same opponent.
