RECENTLY RETIRED Daily News sports writer Bernard Fernandez, for the 11th consecutive year, had placing entries in the Boxing Writers Association of America writing contest, known as the "Barneys" in honor of the late former president of the BWAA, Barney Nagler.

Fernandez took first place in the column category, for an analysis of why retired former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson still mattered in a division dominated by Eastern Europeans and bereft of compelling American contenders.

He also had an honorable mention in the feature-over-1,750 category, for a story on the controversial induction of the movies' Rocky Balboa, actor Sylvester Stallone, into the International Boxing Hall of Fame's nonparticipant wing.

"Barneys" writing and photo winners will be recognized at the 87th annual BWAA Awards Dinner at the Copacabana in New York City on June 6, along with Fighter of the Year for 2011, super middleweight champion Andre Ward.
