Missouri's Smith out with broken bone in leg

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said star defensive end Aldon Smith will miss the Tigers' game Saturday against Miami of Ohio due to a broken bone in his right leg.

Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said star defensive end Aldon Smith will miss the Tigers' game Saturday against Miami of Ohio due to a broken bone in his right leg.

Pinkel said on the Big 12 coaches' conference call yesterday that Smith broke a non-weight bearing bone in his leg in Saturday's win over San Diego State.

Pinkel said Smith should be able to return this season, perhaps within a couple weeks. Pinkel said he's had players play through the injury before.

"The good news is we're going to get him back," Pinkel said, adding that MU has developed depth at the position with reserves Brad Madison, Marcus Malbrough and Michael Sam. "Their roles will change a little bit, and that's all good."

Pinkel said Madison would start Saturday against visiting Miami of Ohio, backed up by Sam, with Malbrough at the other end behind starter Jacquies Smith.

Smith set a school record with 11 1/2 sacks last season as a freshman, enough to finish tied for ninth in the country. He leads the team with three sacks so far this season.

* Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said linebacker Chris Borland is out at least a week and that the Badgers haven't decided whether to pursue a medical redshirt for him.

Borland was the Big Ten's freshman of the year last season, but he hurt his left shoulder again on Saturday in the 11th-ranked Badgers' 20-19 victory over Arizona State.

Bielema says he'll only play Borland again when he's healthy.

Borland had offseason surgery to repair torn cartilage in the same shoulder, but initially re-aggravated the injury against UNLV and missed Wisconsin's win against San Jose State.

Despite wearing two braces, he hurt the shoulder Saturday making an arm tackle midway through the first quarter against the Sun Devils and did not return.

* Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said injured quarterback Jordan Wynn should begin throwing in practice again this week.

The way backup Terrance Cain has played for the 13th-ranked Utes, Whittingham will take his time as Wynn's sprained right thumb continues to heal.

Cain completed 20 of 23 passes on Saturday in a win at New Mexico to set a school record for completion percentage in a game.
