RIVERDALE, N.Y. - All the Neosporin in the world couldn't supress the bleeding that transpired inside the Draddy Gymnasium last night.
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - All the Neosporin in the world couldn't supress the bleeding that transpired inside the Draddy Gymnasium last night.
Scoring the game's final 17 points, Manhattan bested Penn, 59-54, despite the Quakers' dominance for most of the contest. Penn (1-1) was still ahead, 54-42, with 7 minutes remaining in regulation.
"First and foremost, I have to do a better job of stopping the bleeding," Penn coach Jerome Allen said. "I needed to put the right guys in the right spots for us to get baskets, and that just did not happen."
Jack Eggleston, who finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, hit one of his four three-pointers for Penn's last points. Zack Rosen added 14 points but the two remained the only spark, accounting for more than half of the Quakers' total. Andreas Schreiber scored six.
"We had shots, and we know that in tough situations we can rely on those guys and their abilities, but basketball is a team sport and we need five guys to win," Allen said.
"Look, all we can do is go back and regroup. The good thing for us is that it's early on in the season, so we hope that as the season progresses guys will start to emerge."
George Beamon led Manhattan (2-0) with 21 points and Kidani Brutus added 14 points and 10 boards.
Penn now prepares for a city battle against Drexel at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Palestra.
"The schedule doesn't get any easier, so you really have to capitalize on what is given to you and we just didn't do that tonight," Allen said.
"But we are going into this game against Drexel focused. It's a city game, so obviously it's going to be a battle. We will dissect the footage of our mistakes and make sure we correct them."
