St. Joe's women win tourney opener

Katie Kuester led the Hawks (9-3) with 14 points, with four three-pointers, while Baker added 13, Samira Van Grinsven 11 and Kelly Cavallo 10.

The Hawks will meet Lafayette in the championship game today. The Leopards (6-6) were 56-54 victors over Quinnipiac, behind 12 points by LaKeisha Wright.

In other games:

* At Maryland, the 18th-ranked Terrapins (11-1) jumped to a 12-0 lead and rolled to an 83-45 victory over La Salle (4-7) in a first-round game of the Terrapin Classic.

Ebonee Jones led the Explorers with 18 points, with Ashley Gale adding 14. Lynetta Kizer led Maryland with 15 points, and freshman Alyssa Thomas had her ninth straight double-figure scoring game with 14 points.

La Salle will play Liberty, an 81-66 loser to St. John's, in the tournament's third-place game today before No. 17 St. John's and Maryland meet in the title game.

* At San Diego, Kamile Nacickaite's 11 points led Drexel (7-3) in a 74-45 loss to No. 7 Texas A & M (10-1), 74-45.

Noteworthy

* Villanova's game with Siena at the Fordham Holiday Classic was postponed yesterday due to the winter storm which hit New York City over the weekend. The Wildcats and Siena will play today at 3 o'clock, and Villanova will face Yale tomorrow, also at 3.
