College Basketball: No. 8 Boilermakers fall to Golden Gophers

Blake Hoffarber's 26 points and Minnesota's improved perimeter defense helped the Golden Gophers outlast eighth-ranked Purdue, 70-67, in Minneapolis on Thursday night.

JaJuan Johnson had 29 points and 11 rebounds for the Boilermakers (15-2, 4-1 Big Ten), whose 10-game winning streak ended.

Al Nolen added 13 points, eight assists, and three steals for the Gophers (13-4, 2-3).

Duke "knocked back." Top-ranked Duke hadn't lost in 25 games, the second-longest run in school history, and Florida State had lost twice in little more than a week when the Seminoles pulled off their latest upset of the Blue Devils, 66-61, on Wednesday. It was the third time since 2002 that Florida State beat a top-ranked Duke team at home.

"They knocked us back," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Fisher, Jardine on Cousy list. Villanova's Corey Fisher is among 20 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, given to the nation's outstanding point guard. Fisher is averaging 15.3 points and 4.8 assists for the seventh-ranked Wildcats. Syracuse junior Scoop Jardine, a Neumann-Goretti graduate averaging 13.8 points and 6.0 assists for the No. 4 Orange, is also on the list.

In the area: Dom Farrello had 24 points and 10 rebounds as Cabrini beat Centenary, 95-82, in Hackettstown, N.J. . . . Visiting Johns Hopkins proved to be too much for Swarthmore, despite Jay Kober's game-high 19 points, as the Garnet fell to the bigger Blue Jays, 67-53. . . . Jon Crabtree scored 24 points for host Gwynedd-Mercy in an 81-58 rout of visiting Marywood.

Denzel Mooney scored 35 points, but Lincoln fell to Fayetteville State, 74-59, in North Carolina. . . . Lower Moreland grad Louis Sarris-Grau's trey with 28 seconds left made it a two-possession game as visiting McDaniel topped Haverford, 68-61. . . . Alberto Munoz scored 22 points as host Holy Family stunned Goldey-Beacom, 62-51.

Marquise Boggs netted 28 points, and Pat O'Connor had 19 points and 10 rebounds as host Neumann demolished Philadelphia Biblical, 106-86. . . . Andrew Powers scored the go-ahead jumper with 51 seconds left as Gettysburg edged Ursinus, 59-56, in Collegeville. . . . Kevin Glenn came off the bench to score 22 points as visiting Keystone downed Rosemont, 72-60. . . . Adewale Adefemi had 18 points to lead University of the Sciences to a 68-61 win over visiting Wilmington.
