The Wolverines (12-9, 2-6 Big Ten) had lost six straight games this season and 11 in a row at Michigan State.
The Spartans (12-8, 4-4) have lost three straight, slumping to the bottom of the Associated Press poll after being ranked No. 2 in the preseason.
"It's not a very good situation we're in," coach Tom Izzo said.
Michigan State's Kalin Lucas scored 27 points.
Darius Morris had 17 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 10 for the Wolverines.

* At Indiana, Jordan Hulls had 18 points and Christian Watford added 16 as the Hoosiers (11-10, 2-6 Big Ten) upset No. 20 Illinois, 52-49. Mike Davis led the Fighting Illini (14-7, 4-4) with 14 points.
* At Duke, Nolan Smith had 28 points and Seth Curry added a season-high 20 to help lift the third-ranked Blue Devils (19-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) past Boston College, 84-68.
BC's Reggie Jackson, who entered second to Smith in the ACC scoring race, finished with a season-low seven points. Corey Raji scored 18 points for the Eagles, (14-7, 4-3).
* At Mississippi State, Jeffery Taylor scored 25 points and John Jenkins added 21 as No. 19 Vanderbilt (15-4, 3-2 Southeastern Conference) rallied for an 81-74 victory, winning at Humphrey Coliseum for the first time since 1993.
* At George Mason, Luke Hancock and Andre Cornelius sparked runs of 23-0 and 17-0 as the Patriots cruised to a 84-58 win over Towson.
Hancock had nine of his 19 points as George Mason (16-5, 8-2 Colonial Athletic Association) scored the final 15 points of the first half and the first eight points of the second half en route to its 17th consecutive win against the Tigers.
Towson (4-16, 0-10) was led by Rashawn Polk's 19 points.
Before the game, the CAA reprimanded Towson for missing the original tipoff Wednesday because of the massive snowstorm. Towson needed more than 11 hours to travel the 70 miles to Fairfax, Va. The game was first postponed from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and finally rescheduled for yesterday.
* At Virginia, Adrian Bowie scored a season-high 22 points and Maryland (13-7, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat the Cavaliers, 66-42.
* At High Point, Desmond Holloway and Chad Gray scored 17 points each to lead Coastal Carolina (19-2, 10-0 Big South Conference), 82-58.

* About 200 mourners, including the entire Kansas basketball team, attended the funeral in Washington, D.C., for Lisa Robinson, mother of player Thomas Robinson. She died unexpectedly of a heart attack last week. *
