The seventh-seeded Blue Hens (14-16) will face No. 2 seed Old Dominion today in the quarterfinals.
In a game with nine lead changes, Delaware trailed 54-51 with 3:52 left, then pulled ahead on back-to-back three-pointers by Brian Johnson and Devon Saddler, the CAA Rookie of the Year.
The 10th-seeded Huskies (11-20) got to 59-58 on two Vinny Lima free throws with 18 seconds left, then Carter, who had made 37 straight free throws, was 1-for-2 from the line.
After Carter missed two foul shots with 9 seconds left, Chaisson Allen rebounded for Northeastern, but turned it over.
Jonathan Lee's 16 points led the Huskies, who missed the CAA quarterfinals for the first time since joining the league in 2005.

* Quinn McDowell scored 35 points, 20 in the second half, to lead William & Mary to a 72-68 victory over James Madison. The Tribe (10-21) will play third seed Hofstra in the quarterfinals tonight.
