Penn State, in the same pool as powerful California, will play the opening game in next month's 16-team USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championships at PPL Park.

California has won six of the last seven men's titles in the collegiate sport, which is conducted on the club level. The other teams in Pool A, one of four groups, will be LSU and Ohio State.

Penn State will play LSU in the event's first match on June 4. The champion will be crowned the next day.

Temple will play in Pool D, along with Arizona, Oklahoma, and Texas.

The pairings and pools for the 38-game, round-robin tournament at the Chester facility were revealed Thursday at Philadelphia's Union League.

Pool B consists of Boston College, Dartmouth, Notre Dame, and Utah, while the four teams in Pool C are Army, Central Washington, Navy, and North Carolina.

Details of the women's competition will be revealed Friday.

Rugby sevens is a faster, shorter version of the sport, using just seven players on each side instead of 15.
