Big Ten keeps eye on scandal

The Big Ten said yesterday it will review the child sex-abuse scandal at Penn State and reserve the right to sanction the school depending on what it finds. The 12-member league also plans an immediate review of institutional control of athletics at its schools, including the possibility of a common set of "stress tests" to ensure accountability and oversight.

The Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors said yesterday it had "significant concerns as to whether a concentration of power in a single individual or program may have threatened or eroded institutional control" of athletics at Penn State.

Former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky faces more than 50 criminal charges alleging he molested young boys for years on campus and elsewhere.

In a news release, the Big Ten said: "It has been approximately one month since the initial release of the Grand Jury report in the Penn State matter and a number of federal, state and institutional investigations have been launched. While it is premature to reach any conclusions regarding civil or criminal liability arising out of these events, there does appear to be sufficient information to raise significant concerns as to whether a concentration of power in a single individual or program may have threatened or eroded institutional control of intercollegiate athletics at Penn State."

Still honored

Penn State senior defensive tackle Devon Still was named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation All-America Team. Still, from Wilmington, is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year.
