Sports in Brief: UCLA women oust Penn State

UCLA junior outside hitter Rachael Kidder had 15 kills as the Bruins swept four-time and defending national champion Penn State in the NCAA regional semifinals Friday in Lexington, Ky., to end the Nittany Lions' record 26-game postseason winning streak.

Aiyana Whitney had 12 kills for the eighth-seeded Nittany Lions in the 25-20, 25-22, 25-21 loss. Kelly Reeves had 11 kills, while senior sweeper Lainey Gera led the ninth-seeded Bruins (27-6) with 15 digs.

Penn State (25-8) held a 13-12 lead in the first set and a 1-0 lead in the third set before UCLA rallied in each.

This was Penn State's ninth consecutive trip to the NCAA regional semifinals. The Nittany Lions have participated in every NCAA postseason event since 1981, but are 1-5 in tournament play against UCLA.

BOXING: Kazakstan's Gennady Golovkin knocked out Philadelphia's Lajuan Simon in the first round in Duesseldorf, Germany, to keep his WBA middleweight title and remain undefeated.

Golovkin left Simon lying on the canvas after 2 minutes 17 seconds, following a swinging left to his head.

Golovkin, based in Stuttgart, Germany, also won the vacant middleweight belt of the fringe IBO. His record is now 22-0 with 19 knockouts. Simon drops to 23-4-2 (12 KOs).  

ALLEGATIONS: Two former basketball players have accused Amateur Athletic Union president Robert "Bobby" Dodd of molesting them as children, according to an ESPN report. The network said the AAU is investigating the claims, which date from the 1980s.

One of the players, Ralph West, 43, said he was assaulted in Memphis in 1984. Both West and a second unidentified man said the Penn State child sex-abuse case prompted them to independently confront Dodd in November. Both accusers said they never went to police and only recently told their families.

Dodd did not respond to ESPN's requests for comments. The AAU did not immediately return a call to its Orlando, Fla., headquarters seeking comment.

ESPN quoted from an AAU statement that said it has opened an independent investigation into the allegations and has contacted local law enforcement in Memphis. The AAU also told ESPN that Dodd, 63, has colon cancer and will not return to his post.

SOCCER: U.S. national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has a base salary of $2.5 million, a significant increase from what former coach Bob Bradley made, according to documents.

The base salary for Klinsmann's three-year contract, which runs through Aug. 31, 2014, is included in the U.S. Soccer Federation's audited financial statements. According to the U.S. Soccer Federation's 2010 tax return, Bradley earned $818,244 for the year ending March 31, 2010, including $449,025 in base compensation and $345,000 in bonuses.

COLLEGES: Delaware Valley College junior offensive guard John Lavelle, a Father Judge graduate, was named to the D3football.com all-East Region first team.

Temple senior Tyler Witmer (Wernersville, Pa.) and junior Cody Calafiore (Howell, N.J.) have been named to the Division I all-Mid-Atlantic second team.

Saint Joseph's sophomore midfielder Mo Hawkins (Cardinal Dougherty) has made the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Women's Divisions I all-Mid-Atlantic first team.

LACROSSE: The Wings announced they will retire goaltender Dallas Eliuk's No. 35 jersey before the March 3 game against the Rochester Knighthawks at Wells Fargo Center.

Eliuk played 15 seasons with the Wings from 1991 to 2005, earning all-pro honors nine times. He was inducted into the NLL Hall of Fame in 2009.
