UCLA goes with Mora

Veteran NFL coach Jim Mora Jr. was hired as UCLA's football coach Saturday, replacing Rick Neuheisel and becoming the first football coach of the Bruins in more than 60 years with no ties to the school.

Mora, 50, was the coach of the Atlanta Falcons and Seattle Seahawks, going 31-33 over four seasons. The son of longtime NFL coach Jim Mora, he is a former University of Washington defensive back who had only one season of college coaching experience at his alma mater in 1984 before beginning a 25-year career in the NFL.

Mora spent the last two years out of coaching, working as a television analyst after the Seahawks fired him in January 2010.

Neuheisel, who went 21-29 over four seasons at his alma mater, was fired last month after UCLA was embarrassed, 50-0, by No. 5 Southern California.

Texas A&M hires Sumlin

Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, whose prolific offense made the Cougars a power in Conference USA, was hired Saturday to lead Texas A&M.

Sumlin takes over the Aggies less than two week after Mike Sherman was fired following a disappointing 6-6 finish. Texas A&M, which is scheduled to play Northwestern (6-6) in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on Dec. 31, joins the Southeastern Conference next season.
