MLB: Jorge Posada, 40, is reportedly planning to retire after 17 seasons with the New York Yankees. He became a free agent after a trying season, the final of a four-year, $52 million contract. Only Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra have caught more games in pinstripes than Posada (1,574).
SKIING: Elisabeth Goergl of Austria ended Lindsey Vonn's unbeaten streak in speed events by winning a World Cup downhill in Bad Kleinkirchheim, Austria. American Julia Mancuso was second. Vonn, who complained of a stomach ailment, finished fourth.
TENNIS: Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova defeated Marion Bartoli, 7-5, 6-1, while Tomas Berdych was perfect in a first-set tiebreaker and beat Richard Gasquet, 7-6 (0), 6-4, as the Czech Republic took its second Hopman Cup title in Perth, Australia.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga beat Gael Monfils, 7-5, 6-3, in an all-French final at the Qatar Open in Doha.
SOCCER: On a successful day for Americans in the FA Cup, Clint Dempsey scored the first hat trick of his career in Fulham's 4-0 win over Charlton, Brad Guzan saved a penalty in Aston Villa's 3-1 over Bristol Rovers, and Landon Donovan had an assist in Everton's 2-0 win over Tamworth.
TRACK: Gwynedd-Mercy senior Matt VanDenHengel outdueled Alan Webb, the American record holder in the mile, in the 800-meter race at the Metropolitan Coaches' Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory on Friday. VanDenHengel (1:54.52) beat the former all-American by a second.
