NCAA men's lacrosse set for Chester

Notre Dame will look to unseat defending national champion Virginia at noon Sunday when the Irish and Cavaliers meet in the NCAA men's lacrosse quarterfinals at PPL Park in Chester.

Colgate and Duke will follow in the second game of the day, beginning at 2:30.

The other two games are set for Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

Johns Hopkins will play Maryland at noon, and Loyola will meet Denver at 2:30 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Marlatt scored three goals and had two assists as fourth-seeded Notre Dame defeated Yale, 13-7, in the first round to advance to Sunday's quarterfinals. The Irish overwhelmed the Bulldogs with a balanced attack as nine players scored for Notre Dame.

For Virginia, Colin Briggs and Chris Bocklet scored two goals each as the fifth-ranked Cavs started their run for a second straight national championship with a 6-5 victory over Princeton in the first round. Virginia goalie Rob Fortunato finished with eight saves on 34 shots.

For third-ranked Duke on Saturday, Justin Turri scored three goals and contributed a pair of assists in a 12-9 win over Syracuse. Robert Rotanz finished with three goals, two coming immediately after Syracuse tied the game at 5 early in the third period. Duke is seeking its sixth straight final four berth.

Unseeded Colgate finished with three unanswered goals to score a 13-11 upset against Massachusetts, spoiling what was an undefeated season for the Minutemen. Colgate also netted a trio of goals at the end of the first half, cutting UMass' early lead to just 7-5 at halftime, setting the stage for the comeback. Peter Baum, the nation's leading scorer; Matt Baker; and Ryan Walsh each scored twice for Colgate.

In the other bracket, top-seeded Loyola never trailed in its opening-round 17-5 win over Canisius. Mike Sawyer led the Greyhounds with five goals, Eric Lusby added three more, and Scott Ratliff scored twice.

Unseeded Denver upset eighth-seeded North Carolina, 16-14, to advance.

On Sunday, Leigh blew a two-goal lead in the fourth quarter, ending its season with a 10-9 loss to Maryland. The Mountain Hawks were led by Kyle Stiefel's three goals and Matt Poillon's 16 saves. But Lehigh relinquished an 8-6 lead after outscoring the Terrapins, 4-0, in the third quarter.

Johns Hopkins, seeded second, cruised to a 19-9 opening-round win against Stony Brook, in part because of Brandon Benn and his five goals. Chris Boland and Zach Palmer each added three goals.

The semifinals will be May 26, and the championship game May 28, all at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
