Three in baseball tourneys

The Fords, 24-17 and champions of the Centennial Conference, are the No. 6 seed in the eight-team regional.

Keystone College (35-5) is top-seeded in the regional, with host Kean (33-10) at No. 2. Alvernia (30-12-1) is third, Ramapo (31-13) fourth, Neumann (30-13) fifth, Drew (22-19) seventh, and Daniel Webster (23-17) eighth.

Neumann received an at-large bid after finishing second to Keystone in the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament.

Rowan, runner-up to Kean in the New Jersey Athletic Conference, received an at-large bid to the Division III regional in Newport News, Va.

The fourth-seeded Profs (30-13) will meet Shenandoah at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Christopher Newport (30-7) is top-seeded in the regional, with Salisbury (31-7) seeded second, Shenandoah (29-11) third, Lynchburg (34-8) fifth, and Messiah (19-23) sixth.

The winners of the eight regional tournaments make the Division III championship, scheduled for May 25-29 at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis.

Second-seeded West Chester (38-10) will face fifth-seeded Shepherd (32-17) at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Ted Palka Park in West Lawn, Pa., in the first round of the NCAA Division II tournament.

Top-seeded Seton Hill (42-8) will meet Winston-Salem State (27-16), while host and third-seeded Kutztown (35-17) will meet Mercyhurst (38-15) in the other first- round matchups.

Temple first baseman Matt Elko was named player of the week in both the Atlantic Ten and Big Five after feasting on St. Bonaventure pitching - 8 for 12 with eight RBIs in three games, including a pair of two-run doubles and a bases-loaded triple.

La Salle righthander Kevin Christy (North Penn) was named the Big Five pitcher of the week after setting the Explorers' career record for strikeouts with 223.

Shortstop Marlon Calbi of Villanova (28-24, 10-14) reached base five straight times in a 7-3 loss to Cincinnati (16-37, 5-19) in a Big East game in Plymouth Meeting on Sunday. The senior was 3 for 3 and was twice hit by pitches.

TRACK AND FIELD: Rutgers-Camden's Tim VanLiew (Deptford) was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference field performer of the week for the fifth time in nine months.

The only Division III athlete in a 27-man field at the IC4A/ECAC meet on Saturday, VanLiew finished fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 211 feet, 1 inch. The junior threw the second-best distance in NCAA Division III, 224-111/4, on April 21.
