L. Merion grad hired as coach

Lower Merion High grad Aaron Jaffe, an assistant lacrosse coach at Notre Dame College (Ohio) for four seasons, has been named head coach of the women's program at East Stroudsburg, the school announced Friday.

Jaffe brings college, high school, and international coaching experience to his first collegiate head coaching job. He will take over a program that went to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament in 2008, 2010, and 2011.

Originally from Ardmore and a 2000 graduate of Lower Merion, Jaffe was a high school all-American and member of the school's 1999 state championship team.

He is a 2005 graduate of Whittier (Calif.) College, where he was a three-time Division III all-American and made three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. He also helped Whittier reach the DIII Final Four as a sophomore in 2003 and was the team's captain as a senior.

Women's soccer. Lincoln's Tara O'Brien scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner to lead the Lions to a 3-2 overtime win Friday against host Salem International in Salem, W.Va.

Lincoln (4-3) struck first on a goal by Urszula Koczkodaj but the Tigers answered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 advantage before the Lions rallied in the final minute of regulation to force the overtime.

Women's field hockey. Penn State lost to No. 10 Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Friday afternoon, 5-4, after just 12 seconds in overtime. The No. 6 Nittany Lions, now 2-1 in the Big Ten and 10-3 overall, took their first loss after seven consecutive wins.

The Wildcats improved to a 10-2 overall record with a 1-1 mark in conference play.

La Salle scored a season-high four goals and blasted a season-high 27 shots in recording a 4-2 victory over the visiting the Bryant Bulldogs.

Four different Explorers scored, with senior Neelam Kumar posting a goal and an assist to lead the way. Olivia Leaman (Mt. Joy, Pa.), sophomore Colleen Kempf (Warrington, Central Bucks South), and senior Becca Chylack (Souderton) also scored for La Salle.

Women's volleyball. In Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action, the University of the Sciences won a five-set match over host Chestnut Hill College, 3-2.

After the Devils went up by 2-0, the Griffins (6-10, 2-3 CACC) came roaring back to tie the match at two sets each. The Devils (8-7, 3-2 CACC), however, won the fifth set, 15-11.
