Temple's Travis Mahoney races to Atlantic 10 cross-country title

Temple's Travis Mahoney won the Atlantic Ten Conference men's cross-country title Saturday at Belmont Plateau. Mahoney, a redshirt senior, finished the 8-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 16.5 seconds to help the Owls take fourth place with 127 points - their best-ever finish in the conference championships.

Mahoney, a redshirt senior, finished the 8-kilometer race in 25 minutes, 16.5 seconds to help the Owls take fourth place with 127 points - their best-ever finish in the conference championships.

Butler (38 points) won the team title in its first season as a conference member, followed by St. Joseph's (121) and defending champion La Salle (122).

Mahoney's A-10 outstanding performer of the year award is the third he has received in 2012, including indoor and outdoor track honors. Joining him on the all-conference team were Owls teammate Will Kellar (West Chester Henderson), race runner-up Alfredo Santana (Nueva Esperanza) and teammate Dan Day (Lansdale Catholic) of La Salle, and St. Joseph's Logan Mohn.

Butler also won the A-10 women's 5K race with 37 points, followed by defending champion La Salle (70). Runner-up Meghan McGlinchey (West Deptford) of La Salle earned a spot on the all-conference team with St. Joseph's Emma Slattery (Downingtown West), and Explorers Stephanie Bearish, Wendy Hutchinson, and Michelle Capozzi.

Rowan senior Danielle Czohla won the New Jersey Athletic Conference women's cross-country title in leading the Profs to the team championship. Czohla covered the 6K course at Richard Stockton in a season-best 21:54.66.

Rowan's men were second behind the College of New Jersey in the NJAC championships as sophomore Jon Sewnig placed second in the 8K race in a season-best 25:22.85.

Widener's men finished third and the Pride women were sixth in the Middle Atlantic Conference cross-country championships at Misericordia. Senior Ryan Gallagher (Neshaminy) was named first-team all-conference after finishing third in 27:04.19.

Haddonfield High graduate Matthew Nussbaum, a sophomore at Yale, finished 10th in the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at Princeton.

Field hockey. West Chester (17-2) won the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship with a 4-0 win over visiting Millersville (14-7).

Michele Schrift was named most valuable player after scoring a hat trick in the game, and Kelsi Lykens added a goal and an assist for the Golden Rams.

West Chester is the defending Division II national champion.

Seven players shared the scoring for Widener (6-11, 3-5 Commonwealth Conference) in a 7-0 season-ending win at Goucher. They were Brittany Creighton (Pitman), Meghan Garvey (Avon Grove), Nicole Nardone, Olivia Burgese (Methacton), Brittany Gunderson (Washington Township), Emily Norcross (Timber Creek), and Samantha Balonis.

Women's volleyball. Rowan earned the second seed in the NJAC championship tournament. The Profs have a first-round bye and will host a semifinal match at 7 p.m. Thursday.

In Tuesday's first round, No. 6 seed Ramapo (13-13) plays at No. 3 Rutgers-Camden (21-6), and No. 5 seed Montclair State (22-10) travels to No. 4 Kean (24-9). Both matches are at 7 p.m.

Women's fencing. In the Temple Open, the Owls' Tiki Kastor won the gold medal in sabre, while Epiphany Georges and Mikayla Varadi earned silver and bronze, respectively, in foil and Kimberly Howell nabbed a bronze in epee.

Weekly honors. Downingtown East graduate Rachel Sheehy, a senior at Princeton, was named the Ivy League women's soccer player of the week after the first two-assist game of her college career, a win over Harvard.
