College Basketball: UConn back in national rankings

Connecticut (1-0) moved into the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday at No. 23 on the strength of its 66-62 win over Michigan State in Friday's Armed Services Classic played at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

The Huskies hadn't been ranked since Jan. 23. They were picked to finish ninth in the Big East after Jim Calhoun retired in September and was replaced by Kevin Ollie, a former UConn point guard who had no head coaching experience. The Huskies lost two players to the NBA draft, and had three others transfer after the NCAA declared UConn academically ineligible for the 2013 postseason.

An NCAA ban does not keep a team from the poll.

Indiana 87, North Dakota State 61 - Cody Zeller had 22 points as the top-ranked Hoosiers (2-0) shook off the pesky Bison (1-1) in Bloomington, Ind.

Elsewhere: Trey Burke scored 22 points, Glenn Robinson III added 21, and No. 5 Michigan shot at a 60 percent clip in a 91-54 rout of visiting IUPUI in Ann Arbor, in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Tarik Black had 18 points to lead No. 17 Memphis (1-0) to an 81-66 victory over visiting North Florida (1-1). . . . Garrick Sherman had 22 points to lift No. 20 Notre Dame (2-0) to an 84-57 home win over Monmouth (1-1) in South Bend, Ind.

Women

Baylor was again the unanimous No. 1 choice in the AP poll, receiving all the first-place votes, followed by UConn, Duke, Stanford and Maryland.

Vanderbilt 62, Lipscomb 45 - Jasmine Lister had 24 points to steer the No. 13 Commodores (1-1) past the Bisons (0-2) in Nashville.

Elsewhere: Ayana Dunning had 16 points and 11 rebounds as No. 14 West Virginia (2-0) grabbed a 60-57 win over host Boston University (1-1). . . . Michelle Woods scored 20 points to give No. 23 Miami (2-0) a 69-63 win over host Richmond (1-1).
