College Basketball: Earl Monroe enters collegiate Hall of Fame
West Philadelphia's Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, who went from Bartram High to Winston-Salem State to stardom in the NBA with the Baltimore Bullets and New York Knicks, headlined a class of 10 inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City on Sunday.
West Philadelphia's Earl "The Pearl" Monroe, who went from Bartram High to Winston-Salem State to stardom in the NBA with the Baltimore Bullets and New York Knicks, headlined a class of 10 inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City on Sunday.
Monroe led Winston-Salem to the NCAA Division II championship in 1967 - averaging 41.5 points per game - and was named Division II player of the year.
Other inductees included Patrick Ewing (Georgetown), Willis Reed (Grambling), and Kenny Sailors (Wyoming), credited with introducing the jump shot.
Men
Oklahoma State 76, North Carolina State 56 - Le'Bryan Nash had 23 points as the Cowboys (4-0) ripped the No. 6 Wolfpack (3-1) to win the Puerto Rico Tipoff in Bayamon.
Saturday: Garret Kerr had 28 points and 13 rebounds as the host University of the Sciences (1-3) pinned a 68-53 upset on Division II No. 24-ranked East Stroudsburg (2-1).
Women
Penn State 75, Lafayette 34 - Maggie Lucas (Germantown Academy) and Mia Nickson each had 12 points as the No. 9 Lions (3-0) routed the Leopards (1-3) in State College, Pa.
Army 58, Penn 53 - Olivia Schretzman (18 points) and Aimee Oertner (12 points, 12 rebounds) led the Cadets (3-1) over the Quakers (0-3) in West Point, N.Y.
Keiera Ray had 21 points for Penn.
