Ohio St. unbeaten, all done

The only thing Urban Meyer lost during his first season at Ohio State was his cool - at the end of the last game.

The only thing Urban Meyer lost during his first season at Ohio State was his cool - at the end of the last game.

Carlos Hyde ran for 146 yards and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes' defense shut out No. 20 Michigan in the second half to as the Buckeyes grabbed a bruising 26-21 win in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, completing an improbable 12-0 season.

Meyer got emotional as the final seconds ticked off, embracing his players on the floor of a raucous Ohio Stadium.

Almost no one - up to and including Meyer - expected such a rapid turnaround for the Buckeyes, who were just 6-7 last season in a transitional year when they were facing heavy NCAA penalties. A month after Meyer took the job last November, they were socked with a bowl ban after this season - and still ran the table.

Ohio State (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten) is ineligible for a BCS national title but still has an outside shot at finishing No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 if other contenders lose. Michigan (8-4, 6-2) will now await a minor bowl bid.

Northwestern 50, Illinois 14 - Venric Mark rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown as the Wildcats improved their chances for a berth in a bowl game, beating the Illini (2-10, 0-8) in Evanston, Ill. Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter threw for a career-high three touchdowns and the Wildcats (9-3, 5-3) reached nine victories for the first time since 2008.

Purdue 56, Indiana 35 - Akeem Shavers' big fourth quarter helped the Boilermakers hold onto the Old Oaken Bucket. The senior running back scored three times in 41/2 minutes, twice on long pass plays, to break open a close game against the Hoosiers (4-8, 2-6), giving Purdue a victory over its archrival in West Lafayette, Ind.

The win made Purdue (6-6, 3-5) bowl-eligible for the second straight year and helped Purdue hold onto the Bucket - the trophy in this annual in-state series.

Michigan State 26, Minnesota 10 - Le'Veon Bell rumbled for a career-high 266 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown to put the game away, leading the Spartans over the Gophers in Minneapolis to secure a spot in a bowl game.

Bell carried 35 times and Dan Conroy made four of his five field-goal attempts, three of them from 43 yards or longer, to help the Spartans (6-6, 3-5 Big Ten) wear down the Gophers (6-6, 2-6).

Minnesota played the second half without coach Jerry Kill on the sideline. The team didn't immediately give a reason.
