Jim Boeheim became the third Division I men's coach to reach 900 wins as No. 3 Syracuse beat Detroit, 72-68, on Monday night in the Gotham Classic in Syracuse, N.Y.
Boeheim, 68 and in his 37th year at his alma mater, is 900-304 with the Orange and joined an elite fraternity. Mike Krzyzewski (936) and Bob Knight (902) are the only other men's Division I coaches to win that many games.
James Southerland had 22 points for Syracuse (10-0), which increased its home winning streak to 30 games, longest in the nation.
Blue Devils on top. Duke is back in a familiar place - No. 1.
The Blue Devils (9-0) advanced one spot to replace Indiana at the top of the Associated Press' top 25, drawing closer to UCLA's record for most No. 1 rankings. It is the 123d week Duke has been ranked No. 1, 11 weeks behind UCLA.
Indiana (9-1) held the top spot from the preseason poll through the first five weeks of the season. Butler beat the Hoosiers, 88-86, Saturday.
The Blue Devils, whose only game in the last 21/2 weeks was a victory over Temple on Dec. 8, received 62 first-place votes from the 65-member panel.
