Matt Barkley's career at Southern California is over, a shoulder injury bringing a disappointing end to his record-breaking, four-year run as the Trojans' quarterback.

Coach Lane Kiffin said Thursday that the senior quarterback won't play against Georgia Tech in Monday's Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, because of an injured shoulder. Instead, redshirt freshman Max Wittek will make his second career start.

Barkley's throwing shoulder was injured during USC's second-to-last game against UCLA, and he didn't play in the season finale against Notre Dame. Wittek started the game, and the Trojans lost to the Fighting Irish to fall to 7-5 for the season.

Military Bowl. Bowling Green couldn't match San Jose State's prolific passing game, and the defense couldn't do quite enough to stop David Fales, who overcame the wind and cold at Washington's RFK Stadium in the No. 24 Spartans' 29-20 win Thursday.

The Falcons (8-5) led twice in the second half, the last time at 20-19 after John Pettigrew's 1-yard run with 10 minutes, 26 seconds remaining. Later in the fourth quarter, Fales led the drive that set up Austin Lopez's 27-yard field goal with 4:43 to play, and De'Leon Eskridge's 1-yard run with 2:34 left provided the insurance for San Jose State (11-2).

Belk Bowl. Brendon Kay threw for 332 yards and a Belk Bowl-record four touchdowns, and Cincinnati (10-3) capitalized on Duke's inept play in the closing minutes of a 48-34 win over the Blue Devils (6-7) in Charlotte, N.C. on Thursday night.

Independence Bowl. It has taken Louisiana-Monroe 19 years to reach the postseason at college football's highest level.

The Warhawks (8-4) will face Ohio (8-4) on Friday in Shreveport, La., about 100 miles from Monroe, so Ohio can't expect much of a neutral environment.

"We liken this just a little bit to the first game of the year against Penn State where we knew we'd be outnumbered, yet we relish the opportunity in front of a national audience to display our football team," Ohio coach Frank Solich said. The Bobcats beat Penn State in that season-opening game. Louisiana-Monroe started its season by winning at Arkansas.

Warhawks quarterback Kolton Browning has thrown for 2,830 yards and 27 touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton has thrown for 2,513 yards and 16 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

Meineke Car Care Bowl. Texas Tech (7-5) heads into Friday's game against Minnesota (6-6) in Houston after some serious upheaval, with coach Tommy Tuberville abruptly leaving for the job in Cincinnati.

The Red Raiders hired Kliff Kingsbury to replace Tuberville, but interim coach Chris Thomsen will lead Texas Tech against the Golden Gophers.

Texas Tech senior quarterback Seth Doege is fourth in the nation in yards passing with 3,934.
