College Basketball: Rutgers slips past St. John's

Myles Mack scored 13 points, including two free throws with 32 seconds to play, and Rutgers beat St. John's, 58-56, on Wednesday night at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Both teams' spread offenses used up quite a bit of the 35-second shot clock each possession. The final three minutes became mostly a free-throw shooting contest, and Rutgers prevailed even though the Scarlet Knights (11-3, 2-1 Big East) made just 3 of 5 from the line over the final 32 seconds.

The Red Storm (9-6, 1-2) missed two three-point attempts - by D'Angelo Harrison and JaKarr Sampson - in the final 15 seconds when they trailed by either one or two points.

Sciences 63, Philadelphia U. 43 - Henry Messinger had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Devils (7-8, 5-3 CACC) topped the visiting Rams (8-6, 4-2 CACC) and denied Philadelphia University head coach Herb Magee an NCAA-record 950th career victory.

Delaware 69, Hofstra 54 - Devon Saddler and Jarvis Threatt combined for 42 points to lead the Blue Hens (7-8, 2-0 CAA) over the Pride (4-11, 1-1) in Newark, Del.

Michigan 62, Nebraska 47 - Glenn Robinson III had a pair of crucial dunks in the second half as the second-ranked Wolverines (16-0, 3-0 Big Ten) equaled their best start to a season with a victory over the Cornhuskers (9-7, 0-3) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Louisville 73, Seton Hall 58 - Gorgui Dieng had 16 points and 14 rebounds as the No. 3 Cardinals (14-1, 2-0 Big East) beat the Pirates (12-4, 1-2) in Newark, N.J.

Other local games: Khalief Trawick (Franklin Learning Center) had 17 points to lead Arcadia to (8-5, 4-3 MCOM) to a 74-67 win at Elizabethtown (4-8, 2-5). . . . In Doylestown, Jeremy Beckett notched 26 points and 15 rebounds to lead Delaware Valley (8-5, 2-1 Freedom) to an 81-69 win over Wilkes (7-6, 0-3). . . . Jeremy Knowles had 18 points as host Cabrini (9-4, 5-1 CSAC) pinned an 84-58 loss on Neumann (4-8, 3-2) in Radnor.
