Sophomore point guard Trey Burke's jumper with 17 seconds remaining went down, then came out, leaving the No. 2 Wolverines on the wrong side of a 56-53 loss to 15th-ranked Ohio State.
After top-ranked Duke lost to North Carolina State on Saturday, the Wolverines were in prime position to ascend to No. 1 for the first time since November 1992. Instead, they went home with their first loss.
"Some go in and some don't," Burke said. "I thought it was going in. It looked good."
The Buckeyes had done most of their offensive damage early with a 16-0 run that started and ended with baskets by Deshaun Thomas, who led the Buckeyes (13-3, 3-1 Big Ten) with 20 points.
From there, it was just a matter of whether Ohio State - which had blown a late lead at Duke in November - could hold off rival Michigan (16-1, 3-1), which was averaging 81 points a game with four starters in double figures.
Purdue 60, Penn St. 42 - Ronnie Johnson scored 13 points to help the Boilermakers bully the Nittany Lions in Big Ten action in West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue (8-8, 2-2), which was coming off double-digit losses to Michigan State and Ohio State, held Penn State (8-8, 0-4) to 26 percent shooting.
Evansville 71, Wichita St. 67 - The Aces shocked the No. 23 Shockers, handing them their second loss of the season in Missouri Valley Conference action in Evansville, Ind. Evansville improved to 11-6, 4-1 in the MVC, while Wichita State fell to 15-2, 4-1.
Providence 67, Seton Hall 55 - The Friars (9-7 Big East) scored their first conference win after three losses, whipping the Pirates (12-5, 1-3).
