College Basketball: No. 1 Louisville proves it at UConn

Russ Smith scored 23 points, and Louisville, playing just hours after it moved to No. 1, used a strong second half to beat Connecticut, 73-60, Monday night in Hartford, Conn. The Cardinals (16-1, 4-0 Big East) won their 11th straight. Omar Calhoun led the Huskies (12-4, 2-2) with 20 points.

Russ Smith scored 23 points, and Louisville, playing just hours after it moved to No. 1, used a strong second half to beat Connecticut, 73-60, Monday night in Hartford, Conn. The Cardinals (16-1, 4-0 Big East) won their 11th straight. Omar Calhoun led the Huskies (12-4, 2-2) with 20 points.

Elsewhere: Immaculata (5-8, 4-2 CSAC) fell on the road at Neumann (5-9, 4-3). . . . Joe Brown scored 22 points to lead Arcadia (10-5) to their fourth straight win, 81-71, over Delaware Valley (8-7) in Glenside.

Women

Adriana Sciascia (Neumann-Goretti) scored 19 points, but host Immaculata (6-10, 4-3 CSAC) fell to Gwynedd-Mercy (0-5, 6-0), 81-75. . . . Lincoln (6-10, 2-4 CIAA) dropped an 80-48 decision to Division II defending champion Shaw (13-2, 5-1) in Raleigh, N.C.

Honors. Temple center Anthony Lee was named the Big Five men's basketball player of the week. Temple center Victoria Macaulay and St. Joseph's forward Chatilla van Grinsven are the Big Five women's co-players of the week.

Owls reschedule Titans. The Temple men's basketball team will host Detroit at 7 p.m. on Feb 28. The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 28, but was postponed.

O'Neill out at USC. Southern Cal men's coach Kevin O'Neill was fired with the Trojans 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-12.
