Michigan State rose from eighth to fourth and was followed by Florida, Duke, Michigan, Syracuse, Kansas and Louisville.
K-State, Irish win. Will Spradling scored 19 points and No. 14 Kansas State (21-5, 10-3 Big 12) used a big first-half run to build a 71-61 win at home over West Virginia (13-13, 6-7) in Manhattan on Monday night, ruining the return of Mountaineers coach Bob Huggins to the school he helped rebuild. . . . Jerian Grant and Jack Cooley scored 13 points each and No. 25 Notre Dame (21-6, 9-5 Big East) overcome a horrendous shooting start to grab a 51-42 road win over No. 20 Pittsburgh (20-7, 8-6).
Former Duke star dies. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said that the mother of former Blue Devils star Phil Henderson told him that her son died Sunday at his home in the Philippines at the age of 44. No cause of death was given.
Henderson was a senior captain and the leading scorer on the 1989-90 Duke team that lost to UNLV in the national championship game. He averaged 18.5 points that year.
Henderson was taken by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the 1990 NBA draft but played internationally as a pro.
Coach reprimanded. California coach Mike Montgomery was reprimanded by the Pac-12 for shoving one of his players in the chest during a game on Sunday night.
The conference did not announce what specific punishment Montgomery received, although he will not be suspended.
The confrontation happened during a timeout early in the second half of Cal's 76-68 win over Southern California. Montgomery yelled at star guard Allen Crabbe for nonchalant play and then shoved him in the chest with both hands.
Honors. Temple's Khalif Wyatt (Norristown) and La Salle's Ramon Galloway were named Big 5 co-players of the week.
