Police arrest suspect in Delaware QB stabbing

The Newark Police Department made an arrest Monday in connection with the Sunday morning stabbing of Delaware senior quarterback Trevor Sasek.

Michael J. Creed, 25 and a Newark resident, was charged with first-degree assault and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

Sasek, a graduate of Spring-Ford High in Royersford, suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and abdomen during the fight. He underwent surgery and is in stable condition.

"For privacy reasons, we're not confirming the identity of the victim," University of Delaware spokeswoman Andrea Boyle said Monday afternoon. "University officials have been in touch with the injured student and his family, and we wish him a speedy recovery."

According to a release issued by the university, the stabbing occurred about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in a city parking lot behind the Main Street Galleria at 54 E. Delaware Ave.

The release, issued late Sunday morning, said that "responding officers learned that an argument between the victim and a suspect in the parking lot led to a fight. The victim, a 22-year-old UD student, was taken to Christiana Hospital by private vehicle."

Aided by surveillance cameras in the area, detectives were able to obtain information on a vehicle that Creed had been associated with shortly before the fight.

Sasek, of Limerick, played football and baseball at Spring-Ford. He graduated from the school in 2009.

"We don't know anything more than what has already been reported," Spring-Ford athletic director Mickey McDaniel said Monday. "All we know is that something occurred, and that's it."

McDaniel added that he had not spoken to Sasek's parents, Edward and Victoria.

At Delaware, the 6-foot-6, 225-pound Sasek has played in 13 games over the last three seasons, with three starts. In 2011, after earning the starting spot in preseason drills, he was sidelined by a knee injury.

Sasek was a three-year starter at quarterback for Spring-Ford and also served as a punter. In 2008, he earned second-team all-Pioneer Athletic Conference honors at quarterback and was a first-team punter.

As a junior, Sasek, a righthanded pitcher, helped the baseball squad go 19-10 and advance to the PIAA Class AAAA state final before the team lost to District 7's Canon-McMillan in Altoona.
