St. Joe's lands NYC's Newkirk

Saint Joseph's landed its first recruit of the class of 2014 on Thursday when New York City point guard Shavar Newkirk orally committed to the Hawks.

St. Joseph's landed its first recruit of the class of 2014 on Thursday when New York City point guard Shavar Newkirk orally committed to the Hawks.

Terrence Williams, his AAU coach for Team SCAN, said Newkirk visited Hawk Hill three weeks ago and "everything went well."

St. Joseph's is the perfect distance for Newkirk from his home in the Bronx, and he has a chance to play right away, Williams said.

"He's a winner," Williams said. "The kid is going to win games. He's going to win some championships. He's confident. And overall, he's been winning his whole life."

The 6-foot Newkirk will be a senior this fall at Cardinal Hayes (N.Y.). ESPN lists him as a three-star recruit, and he chose the Hawks over offers from Hofstra, Massachusetts, Providence, and Seton Hall, among others.
