Jerardi wins Vetrone award from Atlantic 10

Daily News' lead college basketball writer is honored with prize named after longtime La Salle icon Bob Vetrone.

SPORTS WRITER Dick Jerardi was named the 2015 Bob Vetrone Media Award winner by the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Jerardi has been at the Daily News since 1985 and our lead college basketball writer since 1993.

The award is given to "those whose service, professionalism and commitment have made a lasting contribution to [A-10] student-athletes and institutions."

La Salle and Saint Joseph's are currently in the A-10. Temple was a member of the conference from 1983-2013.

The award is named after the late Bob Vetrone, a longtime sports writer who famously penned the trivia column "Buck the Bartender" in the Daily News. Vetrone worked in La Salle's sports information department up until his death in 2005.

Hofmann is named executive sports editor

Longtime columnist Rich Hofmann is the new executive sports editor of the Daily News. He takes over for Chuck Bausman, who retired after 15 years at the paper, the last three running the sports department.

"It's an honor to follow somebody of Chuck's caliber in this job," Hofmann said. "I hope I can be half as good as he has been as a leader of the department. We have a great, experienced staff, and I perceive the job simply: to do the best I can to give them the resources they need and to get out of their way."

Hofmann has spent his entire career at the Daily News. While a senior at Penn, he started as a 6-week intern in 1980, filling in because of a staff illness, and never left. He has been a sports columnist at the paper since 1988.
