Drexel has reached north of the border for a basketball recruit.
Adrian Hynes-Guery, a 6-4 guard from Montreal, has committed to Drexel.
Playing point guard this season for Dawson College, a public high school, Hynes-Guery averaged 19.2 points, 4.1 assists and 2.6 steals.
Hynes-Guery led Dawson to the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship this season and was named the tournament's most valuable player.
"He's a very smart player," Dawson coach Wayne Yearwood, a former West Virginia University player, said yesterday. "He's a natural point guard, but he can play the [No.] 2 spot.
"I think they got a gem that maybe they were not expecting. He was kind of under the radar."
Hynes-Guery was recommended to Drexel by Leo Rautins, head coach of the Canadian national team and the 76ers' No. 1 draft choice in 1983. Yearwood is an assistant coach with the national squad.
When Yearwood played for West Virginia, he faced Drexel coach Bruiser Flint and associate head coach Geoff Arnold when they played for Saint Joseph's.
Hynes-Guery joins two other guards in Drexel's recruiting class: Jamie Harris, from Wings Academy in New York City, and Gerald Colds, from St. Raymond's High in Bronx, N.Y.
The Dragons compiled a 23-9 record this season. Next season, they'll be led by returnees Frank Elegar, Scott Rodgers, Randy Oveneke, Tramayne Hawthorne and Kenny Tribbett. *
