Women's College Basketball: Mershon nets 22 in Drexel loss

Hollie Mershon, an Archbishop Carroll High graduate, had 22 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double in five games, but it was not enough Friday as the Drexel women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped in a 58-52 loss to American at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

American (6-5) shot 8 for 17 from three-point range to help it withstand several second-half charges by the Dragons.

Rachel Pearson (Archbishop Carroll) added nine points for the Dragons (7-3).

St. Joseph's 51, Fairfield 38 - The Hawks (7-4) defeated the Stags (5-5) in the semifinals of the 21st annual Hawk Classic at Hagan Arena.

The Hawks advanced to the title game Saturday against Maryland-Baltimore County.

Ashley Robinson (Archbishop Wood) scored seven points for St. Joseph's. Erin Shields (Archbishop Carroll) had three assists.

Elsewhere: Cabrini had an easy time in Daytona Beach, Fla., routing Western New England, 70-35, in its first game at the Land of Magic Classic. . . . Chrissy Esbensen (St. Piux X) scored 15 points to lead Immaculata to a 59-47 win over Ramapo at the ECAC Holiday Festival. Sara Smith (Archbishop Prendergast) totaled 11 points and 10 rebounds and Brittany Merkle (Archbishop Prendergast) had 12 rebounds.

On tap. Two undefeated teams will renew their annual contest Saturday when second-ranked UConn (10-0) visits No. 1 Stanford (11-0).

"It's a rivalry for us, but more than that, it's a measuring stick," said Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer, whose Cardinal have held the top spot in the poll for the last six weeks.
