Drexel drops league opener to Elon, 90-75

Elon made all eight of its free throws in the second half as it defeated the Dragons for the fifth time in the last six meetings.

Dainan Swoope scored 21 points, and Tyler Seibring added 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Elon downed visiting Drexel, 90-75, on Saturday in the teams' Colonial Athletic Association opener in Elon, N.C.

Brian Dawkins and Steven Santa Ana each scored 13 points, and Dmitri Thompson and Karolis Kundrotas each scored 11 for Elon (9-5), which shot 14 of 30 (47 percent) from three-point range.

The Phoenix made six of their first seven shots and built a 15-8 lead with threes coming from Santa Ana, Seibring, and Swoope. Santa Ana later connected on a pair of threes, Seibring had a three and a pair of free throws, and Swoope made a pair of free throws, and the lead was 28-10 with 12 minutes, 47 seconds left in the first half.

Drexel cut the double-digit deficit it faced most of the game to 76-67 when Austin Williams made 1 of 2 free throws with 3:55 left before Seibring responded with a quick three.

Kurk Lee scored 18 points, Alihan Demir tied a career high with 16 points, and Williams grabbed 14 rebounds as the Dragons fell to 6-8.

The Dragons stay in North Carolina over the holiday weekend and return to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Drexel will play against UNCW at the Trask Coliseum before returning home to Philadelphia.
