Penn women drop Game 1

The Quakers had advanced to the double-elimination regionals after earning an automatic bid with the Ivy League title.

Coached by Lisa King, Penn had an eight-game winning streak in March and ended the regular season by winning seven of its last 10 games.

The loss put Penn (30-19) into Saturday's game at 5:30 p.m. against Arizona, the loser to Baylor in Friday's earlier game.

Division II

Kutztown 5, West Chester 1 - Colleen Smith hit a two-run single, and Nicole Henninger followed with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, as the host Golden Bears (33-21) topped the Rams (37-2) in the first game of the NCAA Super Regional.

The game was marked by a five-inning pitching duel between West Chester's Devon Utterback (Central Bucks South) and Kutztown's Dominique Ficara (Kingsway).

West Chester scored in the bottom of the seventh when Jessica Norris (Spring-Ford) singled to center, scoring Ali Vavala (Central Bucks East) from second base.
