Women's College Basketball: St. Joseph's women fall to No. 23 Syracuse at the buzzer

No. 23 Syracuse scored a layup at the buzzer to eke out a 64-62 victory over St. Joseph's (9-2) on Saturday. The Hawks had their eight-game win streak snapped in the road loss.

With the game tied at 60-60, Syracuse's Brittany Sykes hit a pair of free throws with 44 seconds remaining to put the Orange up by two.

But St. Joseph's Natasha Cloud (Cardinal O'Hara) drove the lane for a layup to tie the game at 62-all with 21 seconds to go.

The Orange (11-1) worked the ball to Sykes, who released a layup as the clocked hit zero.

St. Joseph's Erin Shields (Archbishop Carroll) tallied a game-high 21 points, going 7 of 12 from three-point range and adding seven steals. Cloud finished with seven points and 13 assists.

La Salle 66, Tennessee State 58 - Micahya Owens (Willingboro) scored a game-high 19 points, including 11 in the second half, as the Explorers beat the Tigers in the consolation game of the Gator Holiday Classic in Gainesville, Fla.

Penn 46, Drexel 44 - Alyssa Baron capped the comeback with the winning jumper with 2.6 second left to give the Quakers (5-2) their fifth straight win, beating the Dragons (4-7) in the Battle for 33d Street at the Palestra.

West Chester 76, Edinboro 73 - Brittany Sicinski (Downingtown West) led four players in double figures with 24 points as the host Golden Rams (8-3) topped the Fighting Scots (5-3) in a nonconference game.

Philadelphia University 72, Goldey-Beacom 65 - Najah Jacobs (Central) scored a career-high 25 points and Samantha Morris (Deptford) netted a career-best 24 as the host Rams (6-3, 4-0 CACC) beat the Lightning (6-6, 3-2).

University of the Sciences 78, Georgian Court 71 - Brianne Traub scored 28 points and Megan Wolf (Archbishop Ryan) added a career-high 20 points as the host Devils (9-2, 4-0 CACC) won for the fourth straight time. Jessica Sylvester (Nazareth Academy) added 15 points.

Shippensburg 82, Seton Hill 71 - A double-double by Morgan Griffith highlighted a group of four Raiders in double figures as host Shippensburg (8-2) earned a win over the PSAC newcomer Griffins (6-5).

Sarah Strybuc (Archbishop Ryan) led all scorers with 20 points in addition to dishing out a game-high seven assists. Stephanie Knauer (North Penn) scored 18 points.

Slippery Rock 77, Cheyney 66 - Lachelle Miller came off the bench to spark the Wolves (1-9) with 18 points and Chester native Amber Grenwright scored 10, but host Cheyney fell to the Rock (2-9) in a PSAC crossover game.

Scranton 74, Gettysburg 57 - The Royals overcame an early double-digit deficit to beat the Bullets (6-3), who found themselves in foul trouble the entire game, at the Daytona Beach Shootout in Florida. Jessica Porter (Lower Merion) tallied 11 points in the first half before sitting out the second period. Rianna Doane (Bayard Rustin) and Alyssa Isler (New Hope-Solebury) each posted nine points.

East Stroudsburg 54, Mercyhurst 47 - Michelle Boggs (Springside) scored seven points and Helena Gemmell (Council Rock North) tallied six as the Warriors (6-5) beat the visiting Lakers (2-8) in a nonconference game.

Stanford 76, Tennessee 70 - Amber Orrange scored on a lefthanded layin and was fouled with 25.8 seconds left and converted the free throw, helping seal the victory by the No. 6 Cardinal (10-1) over the third-ranked Vols (10-1) in Stanford, Calif.
