College Basketball: Temple women win 4th straight

Natasha Thames, Satoria Bell, and Kristen McCarthy scored in double figures to help host Temple topple Hartford, 63-45, on Friday night for the Owls' fourth straight win.

Thames led all scorers with a career-high 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. Bell chipped in 11 points and McCarthy scored 10 for the Owls (6-4).

Daphne Elliott led the Hawks (1-9) with 12 points.

In the nation: Taylor Alton scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half to help No. 15 Michigan State beat Western Michigan, 62-50, in Kalamazoo, Mich. Kalisha Keane and Lykendra Johnson each added 12 points for Michigan State. Ebony Cleary had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos. . . . Tianna Hawkins scored 16 points in her first start of the season and No. 22 Maryland coasted past Maryland-Baltimore County, 71-45, in College Park, Md. It was the Terps' eighth straight victory. . . . Celeste Hoewisch scored 16 points to help No. 23 Wisconsin-Green Bay to an easy 74-40 win over Southeast Missouri in Green Bay, Wis.

Witherspoon has surgery. Memphis forward Wesley Witherspoon, the team's leading scorer, is expected to miss five weeks after having surgery for a right knee cartilage tear.

Tigers coach Josh Pastner said the junior was to have arthroscopic surgery Friday.

Witherspoon will undergo rehabilitation during the next five weeks and could return Jan. 15 against Marshall.

Witherspoon was hurt in the Nov. 17 game against Northwestern State, but he kept playing. Pastner had limited Witherspoon's practice time the last 21/2 weeks.

Witherspoon is averaging 13 points and 4.6 rebounds per game for the 13th-ranked Tigers (7-1).
